I’m sure there is a scientific explanation, there must be. How is it that when you’re at the point of giving up, cutting short your run or workout, you can find the intestinal fortitude to just push through when your favourite song comes on?
Personally, a song can transport me to another place or point in time, taking my mind off the pain, fatigue or lack of oxygen, if only for two and a half minutes. And what do you know? I’ve run another half a kilometre (I’m slow OK!) or worked through a set of squats. THEN the next song comes on and I’ve mentally reset and ready to smash out the next three minutes! Yes, I guess I really do break my runs and workouts down into minute chunks.
This might seem like a bit of a cop out, but I seriously can’t run or workout without my music. It’s not just about setting the pace or rhythm, but I can’t stand hearing the sound of my breathing! That’s bad right?
So what makes the perfect motivational song for exercise? Is it tempo? Lyrics? Or both? I reckon it’s different for everyone. We all have our own unique motivators so here’s my running/workout playlist. It’s pretty eclectic to say the least. I’d like to think that my taste is quite highbrow and trendy, but truthfully there’s a fair amount of cheese in there. I mean “Pump Up the Jam”? “Call on Me”? Yep. I’m definitely being pushed along by imagining myself as the hot aerobics instructor in the teeny-tiny leotard lol.
So time to fess up. The one one song that really fires me up when I feel like I can’t push any further? The one song that makes me dig deep and find that last little bit of grunt? Promise you won’t judge?
Yep, Britney Spears. Don’t worry it came as quite a shock to me too! Perfect combination of tempo and lyrics for me. You better believe I am picturing myself sipping martinis…in a bikini…beside a pool…in a french chateau…
Alright, I showed you mine…now you show me yours 🙂
